Community Impact

We believe high-quality projects bring tangible, measurable benefits to the communities involved. Projects can bring employment opportunities, capacity building, and contribute to community funds and direct development.

Higher values indicate higher human development.ยนยฒ

Community Impact

Economic Opportunity

Nature-based projects often take place in areas with limited economic opportunities and ranked lower on the Human Development Index. Projects can provide direct employment and/or capacity building to build livelihoods and eventually reduce vulnerability to food insecurity.

Revenue share and benefits distribution are also core project elements that contribute to local economies.

Case Study

Malawi Rural Development Project

The Malawi Integrated Rural Development project addresses nature restoration, economic development, and household energy. The project includes two complementary projectsโ€“ Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR) and Clean Cookstovesโ€“ that bring benefits to the local community.ย

Land in central Malawi has been degraded by unsustainable plantation style tobacco farming, leaving the local community with poor-quality soil for subsistence farming and virtually no paid employment opportunities. The project establishes renewed agricultural operations and permanent orchards which serve as afforestation of the degraded farmland. The project has provided paid work to over 1,000 local community members along with a kickstarter package of agricultural inputs for subsistence farming. Activities will eventually expand to include reforestation of more degraded agricultural lands with native tree species.ย The Cookstoves project benefits the wider community, with a goal to distribute 2 improved cookstoves to each of the 14,000 participating households.

Improved cookstoves have enormous benefits for communities, in particular women and children. More efficient cookstoves reduce hazardous particulates and smoke, reducing exposure among women and children who spend hours of their day in the kitchen. The reduction in fuel use also reduces the burden of wood fuel collection, providing valuable time savings, which can result in more time dedicated to income-generating activities or schooling for young girls. Over time, reduced pressure on forest resources benefits entire communities and reduces the need to use subpar fuel sources such as waste products.13 In 2023, 4,990 stoves were distributed.ย

Malawi Rural Development Project

Addressing the needs of vulnerable communities

Rural Malawians face immense challenges to meet basic needs. As of 2022, 70% of Malawiโ€™s population lived on less than $2.15 per day,14 and 82% experience moderate to severe food insecurity.15 The country has among the worldโ€™s lowest rates of access to clean cooking fuels,16 which means the majority rely on wood and solid fuels, leading to a rate of nearly 16% of deaths attributable to indoor air pollution.17

Malawi Rural Development Project

Reducing Drivers of Deforestation

In rural Malawi, 96% of households rely on wood and solid fuel for daily cooking and heating.20 This use of forest resources makes household cooking and heating one of the leading drivers of deforestation in sub-Saharan Africa. Approximately 30% of global GHG emissions from forest degradation are derived from woodfuel harvest.21 Improved cookstoves which more efficiently combust solid fuels can dramatically reduce emissions and reduce overall fuel use. By distributing not 1, but 2 stoves to each household, the project is designed to enable households to meet all their cooking needs on the improved stoves and transition away from the traditional open fire.
