Portfolio Monitoring

Monitoring Strategy

Catona Climate only invests in high-quality carbon offset projects that deliver tangible and meaningful impact for the climate, environment, and local communities. We take accountability and transparency seriously and have designed a four-part strategy that guides our portfolio monitoring activities and sets clear targets and KPIs.

Data Design & Analysis

We collaborate with project partners to design indicators and measurement strategies that enable accurate analysis of climate, environment and community outcomes.

Geospatial Monitoring

We utilize geospatial data and remote sensing to track habitat and vegetation changes, climate trends, carbon biomass estimates and conduct risk assessment across all sites in our portfolio.

Project Site Visits

We visit project sites to evaluate progress and outcomes, assess monitoring practices, identify risks, provide capacity building support and listen to project stakeholder feedback and needs.

Third Party Review

Validation and Verification Bodies assess all projects against the independent carbon standard and provide reports with key findings and recommendations that we take forward to action.

Portfolio Monitoring

Impact Pillars

Our monitoring framework centers around our primary impact pillars – Climate, Environment and Community – with key performance indicators designed for objectives within each pillar.

Engagement

Collaboration with Project Partners

Catona Climate does more than just monitor our portfolio. We engage directly with our project partners to provide project design and management support, capacity building, implementation guidance and collaboration on monitoring activities — all designed to mitigate risk and deliver impact.

Carbon offset projects do not just generate credits — these are activities that can restore an ecosystem, empower communities or change land management practices. Carbon projects take time, expertise and a lot of human resources to execute well. Catona Climate’s Carbon team brings decades of experience in carbon financing, habitat restoration, agricultural practices, community engagement and project design and monitoring techniques.

We don’t just invest in projects — we directly collaborate with our project partners and stakeholders to bring our team’s expertise and know-how to support project development and help our partners deliver impact beyond carbon credits. In 2023, we worked together with our project partners on the following activities to strengthen project design, accountability and implementation practices:

Collaboration

Evaluate Performance

We evaluate project and regional data trends over time and collaborate with partners to keep project deliverables on track.

Collaboration

Strengthen Design

We facilitate project impact and operational planning and discuss data findings and risks with our partners to strengthen project design and delivery.

Collaboration

Benefit Communities

We collaborate with project partners to provide guidance on social benefits development like stakeholder engagement, fair benefit sharing, and FPIC practices.
